What happens after you request a trial

During Sydney business hours (Mon–Fri, 9am–5pm AEST/AEDT) the head tutor calls you back within 15 minutes. After hours, we call you back within 2 hours.

  • Who you'll speak with. The head tutor calls you directly to talk through where your child is up to.
  • What the call covers.Your child's year level, the exam you're preparing for, and how a free trial lesson would fit around your week.
  • If your child isn't ready. We'll tell you honestly. Not every child needs coaching, and we'd rather say so than enrol a child who isn't ready.
About the exam

The ASET test, in plain language.

Perth Modern School is Western Australia's only fully selective public secondary school. ASET is the assessment WA uses to rank applicants for Perth Modern and the 20+ GATE programs hosted within comprehensive state schools.

ASET is designed in ACER format and measures verbal, numerical, abstract and written reasoning rather than year-level curriculum recall. Raw scores across the four components are scaled by ACER and combined into a single Total Scaled Score (TSS). The TSS, not the raw mark, is what schools use to rank applicants.

Test dates

ASET is held in March each year for Year 7 entry the following year. Metropolitan students sit at designated Perth Modern testing centres; regional WA students sit at approved local centres on the same scale.

Scoring & cutoffs

Perth Modern School's 2026 cut-off was a TSS of 244.34 — roughly the top 1–2% nationally. Cut-offs move with the cohort year on year, so preparation typically targets TSS 247+ to leave a comfort margin. Other GATE programs accept lower TSS thresholds, generally between 210 and 244 depending on the school.

Writing was the section we under-rated. Weekly feedback against the ASET rubric was what pushed our daughter's TSS over the Perth Modern line.

FAQ

ASET, plainly answered.

Five questions our faculty fields most often about the ASET exam.

The Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET) is the standardised assessment used to select Year 7 students for Perth Modern School and Western Australia's Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) academic programs. Designed in ACER format, ASET measures verbal, numerical, abstract and written reasoning rather than year-level curriculum recall. Approximately 225 Year 7 places are available at Perth Modern each year; selection is based on the student's Total Scaled Score (TSS).

ASET has four components administered in a single sitting: Reading Comprehension (35 questions in 35 minutes), Writing (25-minute extended response), Quantitative Reasoning (35 questions in 35 minutes) and Abstract Reasoning (35 questions in 20 minutes). With breaks and instructions the full sitting runs around 2 hours 45 minutes. The four components are scored together to produce the Total Scaled Score (TSS).

Perth Modern School's published 2026 cut-off was a Total Scaled Score (TSS) of 244.34, which places successful students in roughly the top 1–2% nationally. Cut-offs move year on year with the cohort, so families preparing for Perth Modern typically target TSS 247+ during practice to leave a comfort margin. Other WA GATE programs accept lower TSS thresholds, generally between 210 and 244 depending on the school and program.

Perth Modern School (fully selective) and more than 20 GATE academic programs across Western Australia use ASET for Year 7 selection. GATE programs are hosted within comprehensive state secondary schools across both Perth metropolitan and regional WA. Each program publishes its own TSS threshold and family preference order; students can nominate multiple programs on a single application and are placed in their highest-preference program for which they qualify.

ASET is held in March each year for Year 7 entry the following year. Perth metropolitan students sit at designated Perth Modern testing centres; regional WA students sit at approved local centres so they do not need to travel to Perth. Regional and metropolitan students compete on the same TSS scale, so the testing location does not change the standard required for placement.

Six to twelve months of structured preparation before the March sitting is the most common timeline for students targeting TSS 240+. Twelve months is recommended where the student is aiming at Perth Modern (TSS 244+) or has gaps in any of the four components. Effective preparation includes weekly timed practice across all four components, regular full-length mock tests under ACER timing, and targeted writing feedback.

Yes — more than 20 GATE academic programs across WA accept ASET results, with TSS thresholds ranging from approximately 209.5 to 244. These programs sit inside comprehensive public secondary schools and cover a wide spread of metropolitan and regional locations. Families targeting Perth Modern routinely nominate one or more GATE programs as backup preferences on the same application.

Raw scores across the four ASET components — Reading, Writing, Quantitative Reasoning and Abstract Reasoning — are scaled by ACER and combined into a single Total Scaled Score (TSS). The TSS, not the raw mark, is what schools use to rank applicants. TSS allows comparison across years and cohorts, which is why published cut-offs (such as Perth Modern's 244.34 for 2026) are quoted in TSS rather than percentage terms.

ASET is WA-specific, used for Perth Modern School and GATE programs, and tests four components including a 25-minute extended writing response. EduTest is used by independent and Catholic schools nationally and by the Queensland Academies (Year 7 at QASMT) and uses five components. HAST is used by Brisbane State High School (and some other Programs of Excellence) for Year 5 and Year 6 entry. The NSW Selective High Schools Test is the separate Year 6 entry test for NSW selective schools. Families applying to schools in multiple states must prepare for each test format separately.

A strong ASET preparation moves through three phases: foundations (six months out — wide reading, mental-math fluency, abstract-reasoning pattern work), component practice (three months out — weekly timed sets per component with worked solutions), and full mocks (final eight weeks — 10+ full-length, ACER-format mock tests under exam timing, with writing tasks marked against the ASET rubric). Writing is the component most commonly under-practised; budget regular weekly extended-response drills with feedback.
