QASMT entry guide — Year 7 and Year 10 pathways, EduTest format, UQ partnership, IB subjects, and preparation strategies.
Article body
QASMT (Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology) is Queensland's STEM-focused selective academy in Toowong, offering Year 7 and Year 10 entry via the EduTest over two days. Year 7 is the only early-entry pathway among Queensland Academies. The application fee is $250 (non-refundable). No cut-off scores are published.
QASMT: Queensland's STEM-Focused Selective Academy
The Queensland Academy for Science, Mathematics and Technology (QASMT) sits adjacent to the University of Queensland St Lucia campus. It delivers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme with a STEM specialisation — physics, chemistry, higher-level mathematics, and computer science.
Unlike QACI (Creative Industries) and QAHS (Health Sciences), QASMT is the only Queensland Academy accepting Year 7 entry, giving students up to six years in the academy system before the IB Diploma years.
This guide covers both entry pathways, the EduTest format, and preparation via our EduTest selective school hub, EduTest exam format guide, EduTest prep strategies, Queensland Academies Ultimate Pack, sample reasoning paper, and free mock tests.

Year 7 and Year 10 Entry
Prepare for QASMT EduTest Entry
Structured practice across Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Reasoning, Reading, Mathematics, and Written Expression.
Year 7 entry is the primary and most competitive intake — estimated 8–12 applicants per place. Students who enter at Year 7 spend six years in the academy (Years 7–12), building IB foundations early.
Year 10 entry serves as a pre-IB preparation year for students who discover a STEM focus later or missed the Year 7 window. The EduTest is calibrated to a higher difficulty level; the Written Expression component is not included for Year 10 applicants.
Selection involves:
- Online application with the $250 fee
- EduTest over two consecutive days (typically a weekend in September)
- Interview for shortlisted candidates
EduTest Format and Interview
The EduTest runs over two consecutive days. Year 7 applicants sit five components:
EduTest Components — Year 7 Entry
1.Verbal Reasoning — 30 min
Analogies, vocabulary, verbal logic, and word relationships.
2.Numerical Reasoning — 30 min
Patterns, sequences, and quantitative logic — not long arithmetic drills.
3.Reading Comprehension — 30 min
Inference, main ideas, and author purpose across fiction and non-fiction.
4.Mathematics — 30 min
Curriculum-aligned problems: fractions, geometry, introductory algebra.
5.Written Expression — 15 min (Year 7 only)
Coherent writing under time pressure — structure and vocabulary matter more than length.
Shortlisted candidates attend an interview assessing intellectual curiosity, communication, and genuine STEM interest. Encourage your child to discuss specific projects or problems they have found engaging — authenticity matters more than rehearsed answers.
Full component detail is in our EduTest exam format guide and EduTest practice resources.
